The Boiler Upgrade Scheme was put in place to encourage property owners to replace their existing fossil-fuelled heating systems with a more efficient and lower carbon heating system.

What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides property owners with grants to encourage them to replace their existing fossil-fuelled heating system such as a gas boiler with a newer, more efficient and lower carbon heating system. Such heating systems include air-source heat pumps, ground-source heat pumps and some biomass boilers. The funding available for these heating systems is:

  • £7,500 off the cost and installation of an air source heat pump
  • £7,500 off the cost and installation of a ground source heat pump
  • £5,000 off the cost and installation of a biomass boiler

The purpose of these grants is to help property owners overcome the upfront costs that are associated with the installation of heating systems like air source heat pumps.

Eligibility for Air Source Heat Pump Funding

There are a few restrictions and must-haves to be eligible for funding see below:

  • Your property must have a valid EPC certificate.
  • Your property must be a home or small non-domestic building in England or Wales.
  • New build and social housing are not eligible for funding, although self-build properties are.
  • Existing fossil-fuelled systems must be fully replaced.
  • Funding is still available if you received separate funding for upgrades such as insulation, doors or windows.
  • Installers must be certified by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).

How the Boiler Upgrade Scheme works?

The upgrade scheme has been designed with minimal participation from property owners as it is install-led. There are a few specific tasks that your installer will have to do on your behalf:

  • Make the Boiler Upgrade scheme application on your behalf
  • Liaise with Ofgem on matters that relate to the scheme
  • Inform Ofgem once the installation is completed
  • Claim Ofgem once the project has ended

Any quote that you receive from us for an air source heat pump will have the grant value deducted from it. This should be the same for any other quotes you receive.

Choosing an installer

To be eligible for the boiler upgrade scheme your installer must be certified by the microgeneration certification service or MCS. If your installer is not certified your installation will not be eligible for the grant. Rawson Solar are fully MCS certified and able to carry out heat pump installations.
