Frequently asked questions

There are two different types of power that can be used in electric vehicles. They’re called alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC). The electricity coming from the grid is always AC, however for batteries to store the power it must be converted to DC. That’s why most electronic devices have a converter built into the plug and although you may not realize it, every time you charge your phone, the plug is converting the power from AC to DC for you.

AC Charging for electric vehicles

When it comes to electric vehicles, there is a converter built inside the car, this is known as the ‘onboard charger’ though it’s really a converter. It converts the power from AC to DC and then feeds that power to the car battery. This is the most common type of power found for electric vehicles today.

DC Charging for electric vehicles

As we have learned, power from the grid is always AC. The main difference between AC charging and DC charging is the location where the AC power gets converted; inside or outside of the car. Unlike AC chargers, the DC charger contains the converter inside the charger itself. This means the charger can directly feed the battery on the car as it converts the power already. DC chargers are bigger, faster and a very exciting breakthrough when it comes to electric vehicles as it makes charging you vehicle a lot faster.

Any vehicle or charger which is capable of charging from 7kW to 22kW can be referred to as fast charging. They can charge the typical Battery EV within 8 hours (depending on battery size).

While 22kW chargers do charge faster than 7kW chargers, they require a 3-phase connection which is less common in the average domestic property.

Yes, but not by much at all, and this is often offset by the reduced or removed fuel costs. There are also a number of electric car energy tariffs offered by electricity providers which can help you save even more money.
