Grants Available for EV charging points at your business

If you are considering installing EV charging points for your business, the government provides grant funding of up to 75% towards the cost, making the installation of EV charging points a more affordable option for your business.

This article offers a complete guide covering everything you need to know about the government grant, otherwise known as the Workplace Charging Scheme; how to apply and what the criteria is.

What is the Workplace Charging Scheme?

The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a government scheme for electric vehicles that provides support towards the up-front costs of the purchase and installation of electric vehicle charge-points for eligible businesses, charities and public sector organisations.

The funding is a response to the The Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) initiative to encourage the use of electric vehicles, and help the UK reach its target of net-zero by 2050.

How much can I claim on the Workplace Charging Scheme?

A WCS grant can cover up to 75% of the overall purchase and installation costs – or up to £350 for each socket.

A single business can claim for up to a maximum of 40 sockets, or 20 double sockets.

How does my business qualify for the Workplace Charging Scheme?

Charging points must be installed at a commercial premises, not a home. You must have sufficient off-street parking so that you are not causing obstruction whilst vehicles are being charged. Installations must be carried out by OLEV-approved workplace charging installers like Rawson EV Power.

How do I apply for the scheme?

Applicants can apply for the WCS using the government online portal , or we can complete the application on your behalf or walk you through the process.

The documents you will need to apply are:

  • Companies House Reference or VAT Registration Number.
  • Clear photographic evidence of your dedicated off-street parking that is used for staff or fleet use only.
  • Upon successful application, you will be issued with a voucher code which expires after 180 days, and the installation must be completed before it expires.

Do I need planning permission to install EV chargers?

Planning permission is not required for the installation of a wall mounted electrical outlet for recharging of electric vehicles as long as the area is lawfully used for off–street parking. For freestanding EV chargers, they should not exceed 2.3 metres in height or be within 2 metres of a highways.

Rawson EV Power will ensure that the installation meets all Town and Country Planning regulations.

Can you lease an EV charging point with a grant?

Yes, you can reduce your upfront outlay and spread the costs over 3-5 years with our leasing options. The grant can still be used if you choose to lease rather than purchase your charger outright.
